The Chateau de Canon is a member of the Demeure Historique non-profit organization, supporting us and taking part in the redevelopment of our historical park.
This is the 4th edition of our crowdfunding campaign! Thanks to your donations, we have restored all of our park’s statues and created a magnificent rose garden in 2020. Today, we are giving you the opportunity to join us in a new project: the creation of an illuminated trail designed to highlight the treasures of our park in Canon.
A vibrant family estate for 250 years!
Located in the department of Calvados, at the heart of Normandy, Canon was founded in the 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Elie de Beaumont, a philanthropist attorney who was friends with Voltaire.
This vast estate survived as a whole to our present day and is listed in its entirety as a historic property. It is surrounded by a 37-acre Anglo-French park that is among the most beautiful in France. It is a living witness of the Age of Enlightenment.
Today, its descendants are working tirelessly to restore and bring back to life their estate through a comprehensive program of activities:
Hosting weddings and seminars
Seasonal events such as Christmas, and school activities with 4000 students every year
These activities provide funding every year for the park’s maintenance as well as the restoration and conservation work required for an estate that is particularly rich architecturally. Ongoing furniture restoration is also on public display every summer.
The gardens and their follies were reopened to the public in 1982 after massive restoration works took place right after World War II and throughout the 20th century. They are now listed as Historic Buildings and Remarkable Gardens… The latest restoration works that took place were for the marble statues which were rescued thanks to your donations through two crowdfunding campaigns in 2015 and 2016.

Among the restorations carried out during the 20th century, the renovation of the Chartreuses was a particular highlight. This unique collection of ten walled gardens had originally been created to pale up fruit trees. These trees were patiently replanted with beds of perennial plants during the 20th century.

As living proof that crowdfunding can ensure the success of magnificent projects, a rose garden funded in 2019 was completed in 2020 as a way of reconnecting today’s gardens with the history of the estate.

In 2020, the COVID crisis turned our business model upside down as it impacted our school bookings, our wedding events as well as our visitor numbers for the “Christmas at the Chateau” winter event. This situation also jeopardized our must urgent repairs.
From this acknowledgment, a comprehensive analysis emerged: in order for the restoration of Canon to continue, it was vital for us to launch as early as 2021 the conditions for an economic redevelopment adapted to the situation of a global pandemic ! We have been studying the implementation of a project that would revitalize our business as early as the summer of 2021. We are now appealing for your support to make it possible!
Innovative illuminations in the park of Canon combining video mapping and nighttime lighting along an 870-yard trail that would open to the public as early as July 2021.
The objective of this new trail is to reveal in the nighttime the beauty of our listed park in Canon :
The trail will be open for visitors 3 nights a week from July 13 to August 19.
Each of these illuminated nights will begin with the opening of the gates at 8pm so that our visitors may enjoy the estate as the sun sets, for a picnic or an aperitif facing the reflections of the ornamental pond! 3500 visitors are already expected for these 17 dates this summer.
From June to September, the illuminated trail will be available for corporate nights, private receptions and weddings, combining the reception hall’s rental with a night stroll through the park for the guests.
The crowdfunding operation we are launching will finance the installation of the electrical systems throughout the park: leveling, conduit work, installing the permanent LED projectors and the sound system.
