The city of Coeuvres et Valsery
We are eleven elected to the Municipal Council and all particularly attached to the heritage of our village that we wish to preserve.
Cœuvres and Valsery is a town of 460 inhabitants located in the department of Aisne and attached to the region of Hauts de France.
Our town is located on the edge of the forest of Retz, in a green and hilly, located near Soissons, Villers Cotterets, Vic sur Aisne and 15 kms from Pierrefonds (Oise).
An hour from Paris, our village is known to be one of the most picturesque of Soissonnais, most houses are built in beautiful limestone quarried from the region and especially for its castle built by the Grand Master of the Artillery, Jean d'Estrées, whose daughter Gabrielle was desperately fallen in love with the good King Henry IV.
Presentation of the project
Fixed at the top of the roof of the Town Hall, the three bells of different size have remained very quiet for many years.
Before 1914, their jingling delighted the population and punctuated life in the village.
Like the bell of the church, the three bells of the Town Hall also had the role of giving warning and to return the men from the fields in case of emergency and especially during fires.
At regular intervals, they tinkled to indicate the hours but on August 1, 1914 at 16h, they rang the tocsin to announce the order of Mobilization General and plunged the village in the consternation.
Throughout the war, they rang irregularly before being destroyed in June 1918.
The bombings completely razed the town hall and the three bells fell, buried in a huge pile of rubble.
For many years, they will remain among the debris.
However, during the 1920s, the Town Hall was rebuilt and the three bells found their original place at the top of the building.
They resume the role they occupied before the war and gradually sink into silence.
All these years of inactivity have deteriorated the mechanism and that is why the common guarantor of its heritage wishes to put them back into service by operating them again with the help of an electrical system.
This restoration is particularly close to our heart for the history and preservation of our communal heritage.
Most of the inhabitants of Cœuvres are delighted with this project and finally hope for one day to hear the ringing of these bells.
But to bring this project to a successful conclusion, we have no other recourse than to once again appeal to your heart and your generosity.
Last year, we had already solicited you to finance the restoration of the Banner of the Mutual Relief Society of Cœuvres and Valsery and your goodness had allowed us to easily reach our goal.
We hope that the mobilization of the past year will be renewed again this year with our new project.
The purpose of this participatory patronage campaign is to raise some of the amount needed to restore and run the three bells again.
The works are estimated at 7600,00 € TTC and consist of rehabilitating them to operate them with the help of an electrical system.
The DETR (Provision of Equipment of the Rural Territories) and the Department of Aisne help us to finance up to 40% this operation but we still have 60% of the amount of the invoice to collect. That is 4600,00 € to find.
It is for this reason that we are again appealing to your generosity.
If the collect is exceeded...
The additional funds collected may be used for the restoration or maintenance of other heritage buildings in our village.
Our two wash houses will require some renovations to restore them and some of the roof of our church must be redone in the near future, to avoid possible water infiltration.
