The Lyon Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1801. Its collections run from antiquity to the 21st century, placing it among the greatest French museums. Its ambitious exhibition program brings it an international reputation.
Its policy of openness to all audiences and its cultural programming enable it to reach out throughout its territory. The exhibition Art and its materials, Please Touch (April-Sept 2019) highlighted actions aimed at visually impaired audiences. The tactile model of the museum buildings will extend this unique experience through a permanent and accessible device for all.
Located in a former 17th century abbey form medieval foundation, the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts presents its collections in 70 gallery rooms spread around the former cloister, now a public garden. Its history and architecture make it a vast and complex building.
The Lyon Museum of Fine Arts attendance is more than 350,000 visitors each year. Audience policy and cultural programming are designed to welcome all audiences, regardless of their physical or psychological situation.
For several years now, the museum has been engaged in a process of empowering people with disabilities to discover the museum at their own pace. The goal is to give them access to the museum and its collections as well as to all visitors. To complete this process, the tactile model would be installed in a free access space in the entrance of the galleries.
The tactile model is a key to understand the history of the institution. Positioning the cloister, the chapel and the Baroque refectory as landmarks of the history of the building, it helps to understand the successive uses of the building, its evolution and the challenges of presenting artworks in such a monument.
The collections display is organized by chronological order with some specific rooms: the sculpture chapel, the Egyptian sarcophagus room, the Islamic art gallery, the medalist, for example.
The tactile model would allow blind people to move more freely and peacefully in the different wings and galleries.
More generally, all visitors could find a helpful device in the tactile model: for people who can’t read or who are uncomfortable with 2D plan, as well as children particularly interested in hands-on activities.
The model, which is made in close collaboration with blind or partially sighted visitors focus group, can be of different scales and designs from the museum neighborhood to a specific model of the façades and their decoration, tactile plans of the floors, samples of materials.
The collect will allow us to create a more complete device, depending on the budget collected.
Our minimum objective of €10.000 will allow us to make a model of the location of the museum buildings in the district.
With €20.000, we will be able to add 3D plans of the 3 levels of galleries.
With €30.000, we can add a specific model of the 17th century decorated staircase giving access to the collections and the chapel.
