Born from the crazy project of installing a museum in a swimming pool, La Piscine - Musée d'art et d'industrie André Diligent de Roubaix opened its doors in 2001. Built by Albert Baert between 1927 and 1932 in an Art Deco style, then rehabilitated as a museum in 2001 and enlarged in 2018 by the architect Jean-Paul Philippon, La Piscine exhibits in this unusual place its collections of painting, sculpture, graphic art, ceramics, textiles and fashion.
Created in 1835, the Roubaix museum was originally devoted exclusively to fabric and brings together samples of the best of local production. This initial collection is brought together with the dual aim of preserving the traces of contemporary industrial creation and of constituting an aesthetic and technical reference fund for the training of future Roubaix engineers. Soon, the educational vocation became obvious and Roubaix's production was enriched with sample albums of weavings and prints produced by manufacturers of various origins, collections of antique fabrics and then ready-to-wear clothing.
With nearly 40,000 pieces, ranging from Coptic fabrics (4th century B.C.) to the most contemporary creations (Christian Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Paule Leleu, Elisabeth de Senneville, Marimekko, Michèle Lemaire, etc.), including an extremely rare series of Russian fabrics and an exceptional collection of 18th century silks, this collection is now internationally renowned for its quality. It remains a source of inspiration for professionals and designers and is the foundation of a textile memory that is the foundation of the identity of the city of Roubaix.
Nevertheless, fabric is one of the heritage materials that is most sensitive to conservation conditions and especially to light. Its fragility requires careful storage in climate-controlled spaces and quarterly presentation by rotation.
Although this is the museum's first collection, the fragility of these pieces makes their presentation and valorization complex. If La Piscine is thinking about a large-scale project to re-enchant its tissue library and make it accessible to the greatest number, it is necessary to launch a vast collections project beforehand to study, restore and develop this priceless collection. This large-scale operation will be carried out in several successive stages in order to treat the entirety of this very varied collection. This first campaign will focus on the nearly 3,000 books of samples that form the historical basis of La Piscine's collections and which are particularly complex due to the association of several materials (leather, paper, fabric, metal), with sometimes contradictory conservation requirements.
Stage 1 : With 50 000€...Restoration of the 1000 pounds of samples that require urgent intervention and improvement of conservation conditions
Created for some of them more than 100 years ago, these books are fragile and have suffered in their history from variable conservation conditions. Torn leather bindings, microbiological contaminations and oxidation of the rivets have weakened the books and have punctually altered textile fibers and paper. The following operations must be carried out to guarantee the preservation over time of these precious elements of heritage: micro-vacuuming of the whole, scrubbing of the soiled areas and consolidation by adding pieces, antifungal treatment or application of protective layers.
Stage 2 : With 100 000€... Restoration of the entire collection of sample books
To ensure a good conservation of this collection it is necessary to proceed to a meticulous dusting page by page of each book. A colossal task considering the quantity of books to be treated!
Stage 3 : With 150 000€... Improvement of the conditions of presentation of the collection and valorization of this collection
La Piscine would like to be able to improve the conditions of presentation (signage, lighting, etc.), continue the digitization of this collection to facilitate access and increase its visibility and notoriety.
