For the third time, we are about to embark on a crowdfunding adventure! After having restored all of the park’s statues through your donations, we are inviting you to join us in a magnificent adventure: the creation of a rose garden, a missing link between the history of Canon and the gardens as they exist today!
A vibrant family estate for 250 years!
Located in the department of Calvados, at the heart of Normandy, Canon was founded in the 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Elie de Beaumont, a philanthropist attorney who was friends with Voltaire. This vast estate survived as a whole to our present day and is listed as a historic building. It is surrounded by a 37 acre Anglo-French park that is among the most beautiful in France. Today, the descendants are working tirelessly to restore and bring back to life their estate through a comprehensive program of activities:
Hosting weddings and seminars
Historical events Educational acivities
The gardens and their follies were reopened to the public in 1982 after enormous restoration works that took place after World War II and all through the 20th century. They are now listed as Historic Buildings and Remarkable Gardens… The latest restoration works that took place were for the marble statues which were rescued thanks to you through 2 crowdfunding campaigns in 2015 and 2016!
The park’s follies 27 marble statues adorn the flowerbeds.
Among the restorations carried out during the 20th century, the renovation of the Chartreuses was a particular highlight. This unique collection of ten walled gardens had originally been created to pale up fruit trees. They were patiently replanted with beds of perennial plants by our aunt, Antoinette de Carpentier. By devoting her life to the embellishment of these gardens, “Aunt Toinette” provided the park with its most beautiful attraction for our visitors.

The rose was an emblem of the “Fête des Bonnes gens” (the “Festival of Good Folks”) that was instituted in Canon in 1775 and whose purpose was to reward virtue. The rose from which the crown rewarding the “good maiden” was made from features prominently in the history and the ornaments of the chateau. Rose branches and rose crowns still adorn the façade and the interior decorations of the chateau, harking back to this humanist festival that was very famous in its time.

Numerous archival documents prove the existence of many rose bushes in the gardens but today, the park of Canon misses a garden that would be entirely dedicated to them!
(« Roses of all months »)
We wish to give pride of place again to the rose at the heart of our park:
>So that we can tell the story of this coronation festival that is still so fondly remembered in Canon.
> So that we can continue the work of our aunt who devoted her life to the restoration of the park.
> So that we can keep on promoting our heritage to all our visitors!
Creation of a rose garden at the center of the Chartreuses at the Chateau de Canon so that this emblematic flower recaptures its central place in Canon’s history!
The garden topped with climbing rose bushes will give pride of place to the rose. The varieties of roses will be selected to avoid watering. Among the roses, there will be varieties selected for their adaptability to the soil, for their fragrance. The roses will be joined by other plants that were used in the 18th century to crown the “good folks”, such as the common oak that was used to crown the “good old man...” Mirror effects and benches will invite visitors to stroll and linger…
The rose garden in Canon – Draft project by the landscape architect Paul-Henri Besneux.
The rose garden will be located in a square garden covering 480 square yards at the heart of the Chartreuses of Canon. This space is entirely walled and will provide a magnificent setting for the garden. The rose bushes that are currently planted there will either be kept in place or moved.
In the festive spirit of the Good Folks Festival, the garden will be designed as a welcoming space for our visitors to stroll and linger. In addition to the diversity of colours and fragrances, mirror effects and many benches will invite our youngest visitors to soak up the atmosphere of this place.
Thanks to this fundraising operation, we will be able to finance:
Funding for the landscape planning review concerning the creation of a 480 square yard rose garden at the heart of the Chartreuses in Canon. This planning review contains:
>pictures of the garden as it is today: photography and drone shots.
>Creation of a contact print for the planning review.
>a survey for additional measurements on buildings and surroundings.
>a review and design of the project, with plans and illustrations (information and sketches) for viewing purposes.
>selection of the planted and mineral nomenclature
>Levelling work, bringing in electricity cables and equipment
>Purchasing and planting the selected plants
>Ironwork, furniture, mirror benches
We have many more projects in mind!
Creating a rose species for the chateau, designing a lighting system for the rose garden, improve the furniture of the Chartreuses, commissioning a planning review for the evolution of the 9 other Chartreuses of Canon over time (watering reduction and the development of themes).
