The maronite cathedral of Saint Elijah is located in the district of the historical churches of Al-Jdayde, in Aleppo. Its construction dates back to 1873. The cathedral is a Syrian heritage jewel and represents an emblematic sanctuary for the city’s Christian community. It is one of the most beautiful and ancient cathedrals of Aleppo (to give an idea, the cathedral’s clock is locally equivalent to the bells of Notre-Dame de Paris).
Unfortunately, the war in Syria badly damaged the cathedral. Its roof collapsed under a shell shower in August 2012 and the interior was ravaged in 2015 by bombings. Today, the population wants to revive the cathedral.
December 2016.
Offer a roof to this cathedral, one of Aleppo’s heritage jewel !
Abp. Joseph Tobji, bishop of the cathedral of Saint Elijah carries out this project. Our Country Director for Syria, Vincent Gelot, coordinated the project.
The framework of the cathedral is ready to be delivered since late November, Abp. Joseph Tobji wishes the delivery to happen in May, once the interior and exterior cleaning work is done.
The framework is designed by the company Rubner and is made of wood. Local workers will handle the work under the direction of the architect and the specialist.
Three to four containers are needed to transport it with all the necessary tools.
Mgr Joseph Tobji
The Rubner company plans ten days of installation and charges 1000 € a day. The 10,000 euros fundraising will be used to finance the 10 days of installation of the wooden framework.
With 5,000 euros, you allow half of the work to be done.
With 10,000 euros, you can finance the entire installation.
If the fundraising goal is exceeded... the additional funds will be allocated to the rest of the work!
